Something to get steamed-up about: The Flying Scotsman, the world most famous steam locomotive arrived at the Swanage Railway today (Fri) to be reunited with a rare Devon Belle Pullman observation carriage for the first time in almost 50 years. There to greet and wave it off it was Penny Vaudoyer, the daughter of the man who saved the iconic steam locomotive from the scrapyard to see it at Swanage station as it hauled its first train at the start of a three-week visit to the Isle of Purbeck . Penny flew in from her home in Portugal to perform the honour with the train guard’s green flag at the station this morning (Fri). It was Penny’s enterprising and charismatic father, the late Alan Pegler, who purchased the Flying Scotsman’ from British Railways for the scrap value of £3,000 in 1963.

The advent Candle is lit - "Darkness to Light" - one of the most popular services of the liturgical year. By the end of the service the flickering of 1300 candles illuminate the entire medial cathedral in a spectacular start of the Christmas season.

Once a year two sailing clubs the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Southampton and The Island Sailing Club from the Isle of Wight meet midway in the sea on the Brambles sandbar which is only exposed a few times a year when the ebb tide is particularly low. Dozens of players and supporters rushed out to the pitch and played cricket until the waves come back in and stopped the match. The annual game dates back to the 1950s when inmates from Parkhurst Prison on the Isle of Wight played cricket on the sandbank because warders deemed they could not escape!
